DEFINITION OF LEARNING MAJOR
Warta Madrasah - The meaning of learning can be found in any dictionary. For instance, the Webster’s Unabridged dictionary of the English Language: To learn (verb): (1) to acquire knowledge or skill in by study, instruction or experience, (2) the act or process of acquiring knowledge or skill, (3) to gradually change your attitudes about something so that you behave in a different way.

Learning is acquiring knowledge; it’s an enduring change in living being not dictated by genetic predication; it also a relative yet permanent change in behavior resulting from practice. For the most part, learning is change in behavior and capacity acquired through experience.

Krashen draws a distinction between learning and acquiring a language. Acquisition is defined as a subconscious process that is identical to the process used in the first language acquisition in all important ways, while learning is defined as conscious knowing about a target language. While acquisition is taking place, language learner is not always aware of the result; they are not very concerned with grammatical rules and error correction. They are gaining a target language by living in society where the language is used in their daily lives. When language learners talk about the rules of a target language, they correct errors, and people in the society do not speak the target language, they are learning the target language.

Furthermore, the definition of learning according to Musthofa Fahmi in the book Psikologi Pendidikan:
In fact, learning is an expression that shows its activities. Learning can produce changing of behavior or experience.

According to Hilgard and Bower, learning has meaning: 1) to gain knowledge comprehension, or mastery of through experience or study, 2) to fix in the mind or memory, memorize, 3) to acquire through experience,4) to become inform of to find out.

More specifically, Brown breaks down the definition of learning into some items. They are:
1.  Leaning is acquisition and getting
2.  Learning is retention of information or skill
3.  Retention implies storage system, memory cognitive organization
4.  Learning involves active, conscious focus and acting upon events outside or inside the organism.
5.  Learning is relatively permanent but subject to forgetting
6.  Learning involves some form practice
7.  Learning changes in behavior.

According to Slameto, learning is a process which is done by someone to get a change as a whole as a result of the interaction with an environment. Learning is an activity done by human being as an effort to get knowledge (cognitive), to create attitudes (affective), and to raise concept and skills (psychomotor) as a result of the interaction with an environment. Based on the definition above, it can be concluded that learning is a process that indicated by people’s changes from the interaction between individual and his environment. The process is done by individual for the better result. The process of the learning can be happen in one day, one week, and one month or even for many years. The meaning of major can be found in any dictionary. For instance, the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary: Major (1) name related to sub’s main subject of study in college. (2) The main subject or course of a student at college or university. (3) A students studying a particular subject as the main part of their course.


The learning major at Senior High School is provided to direct students based on their necessity, their interest and their skill. The students who like science and numeral education, they can choose natural science major. The students who like social or economy, they can choose social science program. The students who like language and culture, they can choose language major. While, the students who like about religion, they can choose religion major. It is aimed to prepare students choose a major at University. So, it will help them to get a job after they graduated from university
